Roofing term
Roof Flashing
Definition: Roof flashing is thin metal or other waterproof material installed where a roof meets a wall, chimney, skylight, vent or valley to direct water away from the joint.
Why it matters
Most roof leaks start at a joint rather than in the open field of shingles. Worn, loose or missing flashing around chimneys, walls and vents is a common reason for a roof repair, and reusing old flashing on a new roof can bring the same leak back.
