Mike grew up in Anne Arundel County. He started in the trades as a teenager, on job sites where you learned by doing it wrong once and never doing it that way again. Nobody handed him a trade. He picked it up a piece at a time, from people who did not accept “close enough.”
That is where the standard came from. It was not a slogan somebody wrote for him later.
Twenty Years on Commercial Sites
Before Heward Home Improvement existed, Mike spent over 20 years on commercial job sites in DC and Baltimore. Work for Johns Hopkins. Commercial buildings in the District. Condo projects in Annapolis.
Commercial work does not forgive much. Inspectors walk through and look for the one thing you hoped they would not notice. Schedules are not suggestions. If your finish work does not hold up, everybody knows whose it was.
That is where Mike learned to work to a spec instead of to a preference. It is also why a Level 5 drywall finish, the same standard required in hospitals, is what he expects on a bedroom wall in Edgewater. Most residential contractors have never had to work to that standard. Mike did it for two decades.
Why He Came Back to Residential
By 2006, Mike wanted to work in the community he came from. He started doing residential jobs for neighbors and referrals around Edgewater and Annapolis. The work grew the way good work grows, one recommendation at a time. In 2011 he formalized it, licensed the business, and set it up as an LLC.
He never really advertised. For most of two decades, the phone rang because somebody’s neighbor told them who to call.
How Mike Runs a Job
Mike does the estimate himself. Not a sales rep, not an appointment setter, not somebody working off a commission sheet. He walks the property, gets on the roof if the roof is the question, and tells you what he actually sees.
Sometimes that means telling a homeowner they do not need the full job they called about. That costs him work in the short run. It is also why people call him back years later.
He orders the materials himself and handles the permitting. And then he works the job, alongside his son Tyler. There is no handoff between the person who quoted it and the person who builds it, because they are the same two people.
