Roofing term
Asphalt Shingles
Definition: Asphalt shingles are roofing shingles made of a fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and surfaced with mineral granules, installed in overlapping courses on sloped roofs.
Why it matters
Asphalt shingles are the most common roof covering on houses in the United States, so most roof replacement quotes are built around them. The shingle line, its wind rating and the underlayment and flashing installed with it all affect how long the roof lasts.
