A trade learned on a roof. A business built on a handshake.
Mike Heward worked Maryland roofs for over a decade before he started this company. Commercial jobs in DC, multi-family work in Annapolis, projects through Johns Hopkins. He learned the trade on the toughest sites in the region, and he learned what he didn’t want his own business to look like.
What he didn’t want was what most homeowners have lived through. A polished sales pitch followed by a crew he’d never seen, a foreman who didn’t return calls, and a final walkthrough where nobody owned the punch list. He started Heward Home Improvement so that wouldn’t be the experience on our jobs. From day one, we ran it the opposite way. Owner on site. Direct line to the customer. The work isn’t done until it’s right.
Tyler started helping on weekends in middle school. He spent his teens on residential remodels, picked up commercial work in his early twenties, and joined the business full-time once he had real years of his own behind the tools. Today he runs the crews and handles most of the day-to-day with customers. Two generations, one set of standards.
We’ve never advertised outside Anne Arundel County. The whole model depends on staying close. If we can’t be back on your property the same week to handle something, the promise falls apart. That’s why our radius is small on purpose and our follow-through is not.
I’d rather lose a job than lose my name on it. We’ve been turning down work outside this county for 20 years for exactly that reason.

Mike was born and raised in Anne Arundel County and has been working trades since he was a teenager. He spent over 20 years on commercial sites in DC and Baltimore before turning the residential side into a full-time business in 2006. He walks every estimate personally and runs material orders himself. If your roof has a question on it, Mike has probably already climbed it.
Tyler grew up on Heward job sites. He was handing his dad shingles before he was tall enough to reach the ladder, and he’s been on crews in some capacity ever since. He took over day-to-day project management so Mike could focus on estimates and material quality. Tyler is the one most customers hear from after the walk-through, through scheduling, through completion.
