MHIC License
Definition: An MHIC license is a home improvement license issued by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission, which Maryland law requires for contractors and salespeople who perform or sell home improvement work on residential property in the state.
Why it matters
Hiring a licensed contractor in Maryland gives homeowners access to the Commission complaint process and, in some cases, the Home Improvement Guaranty Fund. You can look up any contractor license number on the Maryland Department of Labor website before signing a contract.
