Lead-Safe Renovation (RRP Rule)
Definition: Lead-safe renovation refers to work practices required by the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule when contractors disturb painted surfaces in homes built before 1978, which may contain lead-based paint.
Why it matters
Sanding, cutting or demolishing old painted surfaces can spread lead dust, which is especially harmful to young children. Under the RRP Rule, firms paid to do this work in pre-1978 homes must be EPA certified and follow lead-safe practices, so it is worth asking about before painting, window or remodeling work in an older home.
